We rotate through 4 different practice types to keep things interesting and to maximize your workouts:  

Aerobic: Moderately high intensity with minimum recovery between sets; focus on efficient strokes with less energy

Anaerobic: Short-distance and high-intensity intervals; focus on hitting maximum effort

Stroke:  Focus on improving one specific stroke

IM:  Individual Medley; focus on all swimming all four strokes
